Choosing the right plumber can be a difficult task. I believe that the best time to find a plumber is certainly before you experience a plumbing emergency – after a water pipe disaster you will have little time to research the best plumber as you will be worrying too much about stopping the water leak.

Firstly, call friends you know and trust who have had a plumber in the recent past and get their opinions on how good they were. You can then decide whether to include them on your final plumber shortlist.

If you know a builder then that would be handy because the chances are they will have needed a reliable plumber at some stage to help them carry out residential construction work. They should know a few local plumbers and also have an idea of their cost.

Talk to the estate agent who you bought your home off. If they are also renting out property they will need to know some reputable house maintenance workers including good plumbers.

Will the plumber guarantee your work for a length of time so that he/she provides a good warranty. If he/she can’t it would be advisable to ignore this person.

Check national plumbing directories before hiring the plumber because if they were not up to the required standard then they wouldn’t be included in these directories. Also, some of the online directories also leave a chance for customers to leave reviews – good or bad, so this may be of some help too.

Always ask for a fixed price before they start the job! You don’t want to be in the position where they charge an hourly rate and get given a huge bill at the end of the job!
